Inspiración
La novela trata sobre la miseria que vivía España al terminar la Guerra Civil donde las ratas, en lugar de ser los sucios animales que hoy son, eran un alimento recurrente para muchos cuya situación era tan desesperada que no tenían nada que llevarse a la boca.
Tal es el patetismo que refleja la novela, que las ratas acabarán siendo motivo de discordia y conflicto entre varios personajes que susbsistían gracias a ellas.
Delibes escribió una historia dura de forma muy cruda y sin tapujos pero con toda la delicadeza y el gusto narrativo que tienen todos sus libros.
Habla sobre las gentes del campo, las costumbres y las tradiciones y de cómo algunos ya querían ir construyendo un nuevo país en pos del progreso y la renovación.
Un libro que habla de un país entero a través de unos personajes concretos. Mucho don de gentes.

Inspiration
The novel talks about the spanish situation after its Civil War. This period was pretty miserable and hard. The rats were the only food for too many people who didn't have anything to eat, thats why they will be the origen of few problems between some characters who were surviving thaks to thi shitty animals.
Delibes described this situation with a realistic style throught hard passages withouth metaphors which moderates the story. The whole book is very direct even if he has true good taste and delicacy.
This is a real portrait of a whole country althought everything happens in a little village with few neighbours.
We can see also the confrontation between the tradition and costumes of the old people in contrast to the progress intention of some politicians thats why, no matter, the tinny place could be Spain and not just a country coroner.
